School Construction & Mural Painting Project

In June 2008, as part of the Oogie Art Leadership Through Art program, students traveled to the village of Fang, 200 km north of Chiang Mai, Thailand. Collaborating with the Rong Rien Kong Noo and Tanya Foundations, they painted murals in a newly-constructed 3-classroom school. The themes varied by grade, with cityscapes for grades 1-2, underwater scenes for grades 3-4, and space for grades 5-6. These murals introduced new concepts to children who had never seen cities, oceans, or space, as they live in a remote mountain village.

In addition to painting, the students helped build a playground, participated in roof construction, and distributed clothes, uniforms, and school supplies. The school had one teacher and six students, many of whom attended class while carrying younger siblings on their backs. This program provided much-needed support and resources for this small, isolated community.
