What You Will Learn
This course is for high school students with strong art backgrounds who are interested in learning or improving on their digital illustration skills, recommended to those who wants to major in illustration, animation, or concept art.

Through practical exercises, and creative problem solving and technical skills, students will:

  • Learn about advance usage of shape language, color, light and composition. 

  • Understand design basics in creating purposeful illustrations.

  • Learn about professional tools and pipeline in the professional industry

  • Learn how to practice healthy drawing habits and career pathways related to illustration

  • Complete a meaningful project for portfolio

Course Schedule Overview
Week 1
- How to set up the correct file for digital illustration, and Introduction to drawing in Photoshop/ Procreate basics and toolkits. 

Week 2 – Learn how to research and mind map, and create thumbnail sketches for your illustration. 

Week 3-4 – Learn different ways to organize layers and layer modes to turn black and white thumbnail to color. Continue working on the illustration

Week 5 – Learn about color theory and composition that best suits your individual ideas for the illustration

Week 6 – Learn ways that light and show mood of a drawing, and continue working on revisions.

Week 7 – Learn more techniques based on student’s ideas and styles, and finishing up the illustration. 

About the Instructor
Michelle Cao is a concept artist with a background in graphic design. She graduated from Pratt Institute and has worked on multiple concept designing project in the entertainment industry.
